In the ASEAN region, 5G commercialization has taken place in Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines, with 5G connectivity levels ranging from 0.07 to 2.28 percent of total connections.

Minister of Communications and Information Johnny G. Plate stated that in order to maximize the benefits of 5G in Indonesia, the Government is building synergy between cross-sectoral partners in the field of TKDN, application development and digital talent.

“To maximize the benefits of 5G in Indonesia, there are 3 areas that require further synergy between cross-sectoral partners, namely the Domestic Component Level (TKDN), application development and digital talent,” he explained when delivering his Keynote Speech at the 2021 CNBC Indonesia Tech Conference ” Future of 5G, Global Connectivity, Cloud Computing & Internet of Things” in Jakarta, Wednesday (15/09/2021).

For the implementation of the Domestic Component Level (TKDN), the Minister of Communication and Information considered it very important to ensure 5G devices produced in Indonesia with a minimum TKDN of 30%.

“In application development, local application developers need to be fostered through the availability of a community-based application development ecosystem that ensures competitiveness with global applications, considering that the 4G era has produced many unicorn applications in Indonesia,” he explained.

Regarding digital talent, Minister Johnny stated that 5G operations also require more advanced skills. “Therefore, there are more courses related to 5G on open RAN, system integrators, advanced computing, networking, and more,” he said.

The Minister of Communication and Information stated that the growth of the 5G network as a game changer with a broad impact on connectivity will continue to increase, bringing many economic benefits to Indonesia and the region. Digital technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence, big data, virtual reality, and others have been widely used by stakeholders from both the public and private sectors in Indonesia.

“The future of 5G, global connectivity, cloud computing and IoT is filled with opportunities that are ready to be exploited. Through comprehensive governance and the synergy of 5G technology in the public and private sectors, together we can bring Indonesia closer to a more connected, more digital, and more prosperous future!” he insisted.

Through collaborative efforts with Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), 5G services have been operating commercially in various regions in Indonesia since May 2021. At this initial stage, 5G services are available in 9 regions in Indonesia, namely Jabodetabek, Solo, Medan, Balikpapan, Surabaya , Makassar, Bandung, Batam, and Denpasar. In the future, 5G coverage area will continue to be expanded in Indonesia.

“We, the Ministry of Communications and Informatics, in particular, will do our best to process and renew the frequency spectrum to support 5G and of course, I hope that cellular network operators will also have to show their commitment to allocating more capital expenditures for 5G infrastructure. This is necessary for more investment in ICT infrastructure, in this case 5G,” explained Minister Johnny.

As the backbone of digital technology, the telecommunications industry continues to grow along with the advent of 5G, which offers faster and more reliable internet access. 5G services have many advantages over 4G, including (1) internet speeds that are faster than 4G (sub 6 GHz and MMWave); (2) lower delay time (low latency); and (3) more efficient energy consumption.

“Because of these advantages, 5G adoption growth has been and will continue to accelerate as 4G approaches its peak,” said the Minister of Communications and Informatics.

Economic Jack

Citing the results of the World Economic Forum Survey in 2020, Minister Johnny showed 95% of national industry players who have adopted IoT technology and cloud computing have a high need and interest in the benefits of 5G technology, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.

In fact, according to the results of research conducted by the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Minister Johnny stated that the development of 5G networks in Indonesia has the potential to contribute more than 2,800 trillion rupiah or equivalent to 9.5 percent of Indonesia’s total GDP in 2030.

“This value continues to grow until it has the potential to reach a cumulative figure of more than 3,500 trillion rupiah or equivalent to 9.8 percent of Indonesia’s total GDP in 2035,” he explained.

The aggressive implementation of 5G also provides potential benefits for increasing business investment in Indonesia, with an additional investment of IDR 591 trillion and IDR 719 trillion in 2030 and 2035, respectively.

“This aggressive implementation of 5G presents the potential for increasing productivity per capita of IDR 9.7 million in 2030 and IDR 11.6 million in 2035 with an estimated additional 5G-related employment of 4.6 million job opportunities in 2030 and 5 .1 million job opportunities by 2035,” explained Minister Johnny.

Besides being beneficial for Indonesia’s macro economy, the Minister of Communication and Information explained that the deployment of 5G in Indonesia also has the potential to help develop the downstream economy, including for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

“The excellent quality of the network that can be accessed by all MSME players allows transactions to be carried out more effectively and smoothly by utilizing digital platforms that allow the economy to develop more inclusively and evenly throughout Indonesia,” he stressed.

However, Minister Johnny reminded that there are 5 policy aspects that must be managed comprehensively to support the deployment of quality 5G connections, including: (1) regulation; (2) radio frequency spectrum; (3) business models; (4) infrastructure; and (5) device, ecosystem, and digital talent. These five aspects are very vital for the development of the 5G ecosystem, so that it will produce maximum value and benefits for the community and the economic sector.

(https://www.kominfo.go.id/content/detail/36980/siaran-pers-no-332hmkominfo092021-tentang-maksimalkan-manfaat-5g-menkominfo-pemerintah-galang-sinergitas-3-bidang/0/siaran_pers)

Press Release No. 332/HM/KOMINFO/09/2021 Wednesday, September 15, 2021 About Maximize the Benefits of 5G, Minister of Communication and Information: Government Promotes Synergy in 3 Fields Since March 2021, as many as 157 mobile telecommunications operators have launched commercial operations of 5G services in 62 countries including 10 of them in the Asia Pacific region.
