In an effort to apply the principles of animal welfare, Forum AWO Indonesia conducted the Animal Welfare Training Bangka Belitung on December 8th-9th, 2022. The training was took place at Santika Hotel Pangkal Pinang and field observation at RPH Air Mawar (Abattoir). This training was fully supported by the IA-RMCP, LEP-MLA as one of the FAWO supervisors was also attending the event. Inviting UPTD Balai Benih Pertanian, Dinas Pertanian dan Ketahanan Pangan Belitung (Bangka Belitung Breed of Agriculture and Food Security Agency) feedlot owner and abattoir officers in Bangka and Belitung region, this event is expected to be a useful agenda to provide an understanding of animal welfare in the beef cattle industry both on the farm and in the slaughterhouse.
The training program was carried out in two sessions, the first was theoretical training with a focus on 3 things as belows,
- Implementation and Monitoring of the Animal Welfare Program, presented by drh. Ismau Alim
- Livestock Handling in Abatttoir and Stunning Slaughter, presented by Yudhistira Pratama S.Pt
- Handling of Livestock at the Depot in Accordance with the Rules of Animal Welfare and Traceability, presented by drh. Neny Santy Jelita Lumbantoruan
At the end of the theory presentation session, the training participants were very enthusiastic by asking several critical questions regarding the obstacles that had been encountered in the field. The presenters who are also FAWO members on this occasion answered questions from several participants and provided practical solutions so that in the future they could be applied at each participant’s work location. It is this two-way interaction that enlivens the training atmosphere and is a solution for training attendance in the Bangka Belitung, especially as the Animal Welfare training agenda is rarely held in the Bangka Belitung, so this is what the participants have been waiting for.
Not only finished in the theory session, in the evening FAWO together with the training participants made a direct visit to the RPH Air Mawar (Air Mawar Abattoir). This visit was intended to carry out field observations and prove the theory that had been presented in the afternoon presentation. In this field observation, FAWO with the participants reviewed the condition of the feedlot facility, oversaw the process of handling cattle, as well as the process of slaughtering animals according to the ESCAS standard, the process of taking traceability data and monitoring animal welfare.
Several participants conveyed positive messages about the training being conducted this time, because they were considered this training is very useful. FAWO hopes in the future this training can have a positive impact on the livestock industry by increasing understanding and awareness of the principles of animal welfare and can be implemented properly in the cattle industry both by workers at the Farm, Depot and Abattoir, so as to provide a sense of security and comfortable for the continuation of the beef cattle business in Province of Bangka and Belitung.
