Government Supports 5G Commercialization, Minister Johnny: Prepare an Adequate Roadmap!

The government provides full support for the implementation of 5G technology in Indonesia. Minister of Communications and Informatics Johnny G. Plate also explained the huge commercialization potential of 5G because it increases efficiency at the customer level. According to him, telecommunication service providers or cellular operators need to prepare an adequate roadmap.

“Efficiency for customers is not only commercially but technologically, because of its speed, the benefits are so many. Previously it has also been described as gaming, virtual reality and so on that can be used, from human to human communication, human to machine communication, and more for industry, machine to machine communication,” he said after attending the inauguration of 5G Telkomsel at the Telkom Hub’s Vertical Garden, Jakarta, Thursday (27/05/2021).

Minister Johnny appreciated the inauguration of 5G Telkomsel, including the plan to roll out commercial operations in the Greater Jakarta area and other big cities. However, the Minister of Communication and Informatics reminded that the implementation of commercial operations requires ecosystem cooperation, from ministries, institutions, provincial, district and city governments to village governments.

“And the industrial ecosystem to ensure the development of 5G technology runs smoothly. Don’t forget to prepare an adequate roadmap, because it is not easy to place microcells in big cities,” he said.

According to Minister Johnny, telecommunications operators need to prepare smart ways to deploy infrastructure to support 5G implementation.

“Use decisive methods, smart ways, effective communication to make it easier for us to deploy every need for deploying ICT infrastructure to support 5G deployment,” he said.

On the other hand, according to the Minister of Communication and Information, President Joko Widodo often conveys to the public that the government will build a new capital city based on 5G technology. Minister Johnny reiterated it as a great opportunity. “It’s an opportunity, it’s an extraordinary opportunity, it’s a market. Indonesia has a large domestic market,” he said.

Encourage Investment

Minister Johnny hopes that the granting of a 5G license to Telkomsel can have a multiplier effect on the national economy. Therefore, the Minister of Communication and Information expects telecommunications operators to also pay attention to the use of domestic components or the Domestic Component Level (TKDN).

“Push and stimulate investment in the component sector, encourage and stimulate infrastructure investment that we must be able to generate domestically, so that we can obtain optimal and maximum benefits. For this reason, the deployment of 5G is carried out,” he said.

Minister Johnny stated that cellular operators should not contradict the development of 4G and 5G technology. According to him, in the deployment and utilization of technology infrastructure, there will be complementary intersections.

“But look ahead, there is a big and bright road that we will walk. Take advantage of it for the benefit of the company, for the benefit of the industry, and the interests of our nation, state and people,” he said.

Therefore, Minister Johnny encouraged cellular operators to conduct feasibility studies and analyze investment decisions. After Telkomsel, which started today operating 5G technology. In fact, the Minister of Communication and Information hopes that other cellular operators will also need to make the same effort.

“It must be remembered that 5G investment is definitely much larger for infrastructure than 4G, so feasibility studies and investment decision analysis from each cellular operator must be carried out carefully,” he said.

According to Minister Johnny, cellular operators in Indonesia who want to implement 5G technology must first think about network technology.

“Because this is 5G, network technology can be on any frequency spectrum. For this reason, cellular operators must carry out pre-commercial tests, such as Telkom already conducting pre-commercial tests, passing the operational feasibility test and starting with commercial operations,” he explained.

The Minister of Communication and Information hopes that cellular operators who also want to start implementing 5G technology must seriously implement it. “Until now, Telkomsel has shown genuine interest and made quick business decisions. I hope others will follow soon,” he said.

Regarding when is the right time for other cellular operators to start 5G technology, Minister Johnny returned to the relevant management.

“Ask the respective Opsel management, we must ensure that this roll-out must continue and develop, so that the economy of the ecosystem, the commercial visibility of 5G must also be maintained. Don’t roll out too much. be quiet, we want one to start with the other and widen or enlarge,” he explained.

In the inauguration of 5G Telkomsel, Minister Johnny was accompanied by the Director General of Postal and Information Technology Equipment Resources; Ismail, Director General of Post and Information Technology; Ishmael. The President Commissioner of PT Telkomsel was also present; Wishnutama Kusubandio, President Director of Telkomsel; Setyanto Hantoro, and President Director of Telkom Indonesia; Ririek Adriansyah.
