Government Encourages Utilization of 5G for Domestic Industry

Jakarta, Kominfo – The government encourages the use of 5G telecommunications technology for domestic industries. The Director General of Metal, Machinery, Transportation Equipment and Electronics at the Ministry of Industry, Taufiek Bawazier, stated that the Ministry of Industry encourages domestic industries to produce 5G base station supporting devices.

“This is in line with President Joko Widodo’s message, in particular to support the production of the manufacturing industry using IoT technology. R&D development of 5G technology will be directed to Technoparks assisted by the Ministry of Industry, the result of collaboration with domestic vendors,” he said in the Webinar “5G and The Role of Electrical Engineers in the Development of Indonesia’s Digital Transformation” from Jakarta, Saturday (26/06/2021).

The government has launched the “Making Indonesia 4.0 Roadmap” on April 4, 2018 as an initiative to accelerate industrial development into the industrial era 4.0 with the main target of making Indonesia the 10th largest economy in the world based on GDP by 2030.

According to Director General Taufiek, the Ministry of Industry is preparing the domestic industry to provide 5G base station support devices and their applications. Meanwhile, for the initial stage, the minimum TKDN percentage value for 5G user equipment (User Equipment) can follow the current value for devices with 4G/LTE technology.

“The government has set 10 (ten) national priority programs, including by building Digital Infrastructure, and 5G infrastructure is included in it to be able to accelerate digital transformation. For this reason, the revitalization of the manufacturing industry is needed to support the program,” he explained.

The Director General of Ilmate stated that 5G technology has a combination of high-speed connectivity, low latency, and wide coverage to be optimized for industry 4.0 applications. “So that sensors and data analysis will be real time and without pauses,” he said.

In addition, 5G also allows users to remotely control more devices. In fact, 5G can open up a wider variety of use cases, business opportunities, and benefits for society.

“Where real-time network performance is critical, such as in remote control of heavy equipment in a hazardous environment, so that it can increase the safety factor of workers, and many others,” said Director General Taufiek.

Director General Ilmate hopes that the webinar held by BKE PII and the IEEE Indonesia Section can provide insight to Indonesian Electrical Engineers to be able to take advantage of 5G technology opportunities to support Industry 4.0, build human resources and ecosystems to accommodate Indonesia’s digital transformation.

The webinar organized by the Indonesian Engineers Association) and the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Indonesia Section, especially in the Government Relations Chapter, is expected to be a forum for academics to work together in building 5G-based technology solutions.

In addition to the Director General of Ilmate at the Ministry of Industry, the webinar was also filled with speakers from the Head of the National Research and Innovation Agency, LT. Handoko and Director General of SDPPI, Ministry of Communication and Informatics, Ismail. Also present were representatives of the 5G ecosystem, including from Telkomsel, PT. Independent Facility Management (TSM); ShintaVR; Indonesian Internet of Things Association (ASIOTI); and Schneider Electric. (hm.ys)
