Indonesia has entered a new phase of modern telecommunication technology by utilizing the fifth generation (5G) connection network. Minister of Communication and Information Johnny G. Plate stated that the national digital infrastructure will be supported by simultaneous 4G and 5G networks.
“I want to make sure that Telkomsel’s 5G roll out which is carried out today will also continue to run simultaneous operations with the 4G network, because 5G development evenly throughout the country will be the important milestones for our national telecommunications infrastructure,” he said at the inauguration of 5G Telkomsel. , at the Telkom Hub Vertical Garden, Jakarta, Thursday (27/05/2021).
Minister Johnny stated that the inauguration of the 5G network by Telkomsel is a historic day for Indonesia. “Today is a historic day, a very special day for telecommunications in Indonesia. Today marks a revolutionary new step towards the future of telecommunications and digitization of Indonesia,” he said.
According to the Minister of Communication and Informatics, many expectations have been received, both from ministries, institutions, local governments, the business community, the public, and the general public regarding the presence of 5G to meet needs in the era of digital technology.
“This is a good sign, as well as a tremendous challenge if you understand the implications of that hope. Today is an extraordinary day, where we start 5G deployment while maintaining and maintaining the internet link ratio, so that internet disparities between regions of our country remain well taken care of,” he said.
Digital Transformation Acceleration
On that occasion, Minister Johnny expressed his pride and appreciation for seeing the seriousness of Telkomsel for taking quick steps to oversee 5G development in Indonesia.
However, the Minister of Communication and Information emphasized the need for careful preparation with future oriented business considerations and decisions, looking ahead, challenging and accepting opportunities as a new arena of national telecommunications.
“At least today will be recorded in world history, Indonesia takes part as a country that has commercial operations for 5G, with all the consequences, both positive impacts, opportunities and expectations as well as negative impacts and challenges that we must overcome,” he explained.
To Telkomsel, Minister Johnny emphasized that the challenges and adverse impacts were not factors that stopped the move, they were factors that encouraged the government and its partners to collaborate so that 5G development became more mature and stronger in Indonesia.
“Our society’s expectations, digital transformation, the migration of people from physical space to digital space have been extraordinary in Indonesia. At least 196 million Indonesian internet citizens, an extraordinary opportunity and digital space in an era where the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic occur. ,” he said.
The Minister of Communication and Information stated that the other side of the Covid-19 pandemic in this digital era is the beginning and as a marker for the start of accelerating digital transformation. “Therefore, let us use this in our national interest, at a time where technology enables 10 times speed compared to 4G, where technology allows low latency, where technology allows more efficient spectrum for us to use. Let us use this to our advantage. ,” he explained.
Full support
Minister Johnny emphasized the Government’s support to ensure that the government’s roles, duties, functions and principals are carried out, particularly in the telecommunications sector.
“I was told that the need for frequency spectrum until 2024, at least as much as 2,047 Mhz to support 4G and 5G deployments. Until now we have only used around 737 Mhz for our entire telecommunications operations at this time,” explained Minister Johnny.
The frequency spectrum requirement illustrates that the government needs to farm and re-farm a spectrum of 1,310 MHz, or almost double the current capacity requirement.
“That’s a big job, but I give a rule that the government will use it optimally and maximally, use it for the benefit of the industry which in the end is for the glory of our country,” he added.
In addition to being a pillar of telecommunications infrastructure, the Minister of Communication and Information also reminded them to pay attention to the Capital Expenditure (Capex) and Operational Expenditure (Opex) needed for infrastructure and downstream utilization of national telecommunications.
“We build upstream with the hope that the downstream telecommunications business will also bloom and develop,” he said.
The Minister of Communications and Informatics left a message to Telkomsel and its partners to continue to make new technological breakthroughs in Indonesia. “My trust is let’s do it! I hope the stakeholder meeting will take the right decision and immediately, my encouragement is to prepare adequate Capex and Opex, the market is waiting and waiting, the opportunity is that,” he said.
