KOMPAS.com – The Ministry of Communication and Informatics said that they are currently conducting an assessment of the use of the 2.6 GHz (millimeter wave) spectrum for the fifth generation (5G) network.
According to the Director of Resource Management of the Directorate General of SDPPI, Denny Setiawan, currently the use of the 2.6 GHz spectrum is still constrained, because there are satellites that operate using this spectrum.
According to Denny, the satellite will still operate until 2024, so the current government must find the right solution to try out the potential spectrum.
The 2.6 GHz spectrum itself has indeed been used in several countries to deploy 5G networks, such as in the United States and China.
“For 2.6 Ghz like in the US, it is still being studied. Because there are satellites that operate until 2024. We are still studying the solution, the same as 3.5 Ghz as well. Everything that has potential, is tried from a technical side,” said Denny in a test event. try the XL Axiata 5G network in the South Jakarta area, Wednesday (21/8/2019).
However, Denny did not mention when the target of this study would be completed. The implementation of 5G networks for the consumer market is believed to begin in 2024.
On the same occasion, the Minister of Communication and Information, Rudiantara said that the main candidate for the spectrum to be used so far is the 3.5 Ghz spectrum. However, currently the spectrum is still used by C-Band satellites.
He also added that the 5G network would later be needed by various fields, such as health, education, etc. Rudiantara also said that the 5G network has great business potential, especially for B2B.
“Corporations are willing to pay more for 5G, as long as the value is higher. I hope my operators can try using the application. This 5G network will run more to B2B,” said Rudiantara.
