Not wanting to linger, since the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kominfo) was inaugurated on May 27, 2021, Telkomsel as the operator of the 5G network has added its coverage not only around Jakarta. But in three other cities.
On Thursday (03/06/2021), Minister of Communication and Information (Menkominfo) Johnny Gerard Plate from Surakarta City, Central Java Province (Central Java) inaugurated the simultaneous launch of 5G services in three pioneer cities, namely Surakarta, Balikpapan and Medan.
President Commissioner of Telkomsel Wishnutama Kusubandio and Mayor of Surakarta Gibran Rakabuming Raka were also present to accompany the Minister of Communication and Information at the inauguration of the 5G service. According to the Minister of Communication and Information, the selection of the location for the launch of 5G services in Surakarta City was based on two factors, namely historical factors and commercial factors.
The historical factor is that the city of Surakarta alias Solo has been known for a long time as a pioneer city in the fields of sports, journalism, and others. Meanwhile, the commercial factor is due to the rapid economic development of the city of Surakarta and its surrounding areas in recent years.
He also stated that the government supports other operators to develop this technology so that in the future it can be more easily accessible and efficient, both in terms of infrastructure and operations. “For this reason, the regional government (local government) must support this step so that it can be carried out quickly, such as the deployment of repeater infrastructure on buildings and even at red lights,” said Minister Johnny.
One thing, the Minister of Communication and Information also reminded, so that operators can control the use of this 5G service. The goal is not to be misused by parties who carry the notion of radicalism and transnational ideology.
From the economic side, he continued, 5G services are expected to support the downstream side with the development of e-commerce for local micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and digital financing services (digital financing).
Meanwhile, President Director of Telkomsel, Hendri Mulia Syam, said that the 5G network has a speed of 20-30 times compared to the current 4G network. However, the existence of the 5G network does not necessarily stop the 4G and 3G networks. The network continues to exist according to the needs of its users.
According to Hendri, 5G networks have been used by several countries for industrial connectivity so that they can improve their efficiency and performance. “We are building in several locations. Solo is one of nine cities that we have built,” he added.
There are at least six locations in Solo City that can already sample this 5G network. Two are indoor, namely in Grapari Solo and the Solo City Hall cluster. Then there are four other outdoor locations. At launch, the 5G service was only available in two indoor locations. Meanwhile, four other location points will follow.
According to Hendri, 5G services in Solo have fairly fast download and upload speeds. That is 816 Mbs for download, and 30 Mbps for upload. In addition to these three cities, Telkomsel is also preparing 5G network services in Batam, Terminal 3 Soekarno Hatta Airport, Tangerang, ITB Bandung campus area and Telkom University, Surabaya, Denpasar and Makassar.
Meanwhile, a number of local residents around Jakarta have been able to access 5G network hotspots such as Alam Sutera, Banten, Bumi Serpong Damai, Banten, Kelapa Gading, DKI Jakarta, Pantai Indah Kapuk, DKI Jakarta, Pondok Indah, DKI Jakarta, and Widya Chandra, DKI Jakarta. .
On this occasion, Telkomsel also presented a demo of using 5G network access for local government digital services, such as virtual tourism technology supported by virtual reality technology or virtual reality (VR) immersive experience, high speed office connectivity supported by 5G FWA services from Telkomsel ORBIT 5G devices, interactive public services for the use of the video call feature in the Surakarta City tax service which is supported by the n-Gage Video, Health, and Safety Detection technology that uses the advantages of the video analytic feature.
Devices that support Telkomsel 5G services are devices with 5G NSA (non-standalone) technology capabilities at a frequency of 2,300 Megahertz (MHz) or 2.3 GHz, including the Oppo Reno5 5G, Huawei Mate 40, Vivo X60, and Vivo X60 Pro. . This technology can also be used in Apple and Samsung devices.
5G technology is believed to be able to accelerate social, economic and cultural transformation digitally. One of the advantages of the 5G network is its high data transfer speed and low latency.
The implementation of the 5G network is predicted to be able to provide a fast, smooth, and even instant video streaming and downloading experience. Even though Indonesia is still in the 4G era, the demand for streaming and downloading videos has jumped sharply from the consumer side. Especially since the Covid-19 pandemic hit this past year.
This condition is reflected in the Covid-19 pandemic in the last year, where network usage
internet soared rapidly up to 300’s percent. The results of the 2020 Global Web Index Survey further emphasize the demand for video content consumption from consumers. 51% of Gen Z prefer online video content for their media consumption, while 31% prefer online TV.
Meanwhile, 64% of customers are more likely to buy a product online after watching a video about the product. This is the main reason why e-commerce giants such as Shopee, Tokopedia, and Lazada prefer to promote their products through online video marketing.
