Jakarta, Kominfo – The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology is preparing an ecosystem for implementing 5G networks in Indonesia. The Director General of Postal and Informatics Equipment Resources at the Ministry of Communications and Informatics Ismail said one of the prerequisites for 5G implementation is fiberization.
“Telecommunication operators must build fiber optic networks that connect their Base Transceiver Stations (BTS), because 5G is the last mile. So it is used at the end of the BTS to the public,” he said after the commemoration of the 75th Postel Service Day in Jakarta, Monday (28/09/2020).
According to the Director General of SDPPI, from the number of BTSs that already exist, there should be no bottlenecking or channel narrowing because large amounts of information are transmitted at the end or the last mile with 5G but then there is a slowdown.
“This is what all operators are currently working on using fiberization to build optical fiber that connects the BTS. Without fiberization, the 5G network will still not benefit, almost the same as 4G when bottlenecking occurs,” he explained.
Director General Ismail explained that the second requirement for implementing 5G is an application that must be built by cellular operators and the industry as a whole, which prioritizes building local applications.
“Don’t let us build a 5G network later, but the contents are all foreign applications, so there are no local applications that release the work of the nation’s children because the income or rupiah is at the application level,” he said.
Therefore, the Ministry of Communications and Informatics hopes that the Postal Community will start preparing various local applications so that when the 5G network is built, it can take advantage of domestic products made by the nation’s children.
While the third prerequisite related to digital talent or human resources (HR) is the third requirement for Indonesia to be ready to implement 5G technology.
“Don’t let 5G technology be implemented but we are unable to maintain, unable to develop, there are not enough people to enhance the 5G capabilities, both from the operator side as well as from the user side,” said the Director General of SDPPI.
Given the importance of digital talent that must be prepared before the roll-up of 5G technology is actually built. “The Ministry of Communication and Information has answered this need through the Digital Talent Scholarship (DTS) training program starting from basic, intermediate to advanced training,” explained Director General Ismail.
