Launches 5G, Minister of Communication and Information: Encouraging Big Leap of Digital Innovation

Minister of Communication and Information Johnny G. Plate stated that the readiness of cellular operators in deploying the fifth generation or 5G cellular telecommunications network infrastructure in Indonesia could encourage a big leap for digital innovation in Indonesia.

“Through 5G, we can continue to increase the adoption and innovation of digital technology in various sectors, both for economic development, health technology, education technology, electronic government, and smart cities, as well as various other sectors,” he said at the virtual launch of 5G Indosat in Surakarta. , from Jakarta, Tuesday (22/06/2021).

According to Minister Johnny, the launch of 5G in Indonesia is a leap point towards a more digital Indonesia, at the same time becoming more one, smarter, and more advanced. In addition, the Minister of Communication and Information suggested that the 5G network is also a momentum for accelerating the acceleration of digital transformation.

“We are all excited to witness the roll out of the fifth generation 5G cellular phone network by Indosat Ooredoo. The momentum for the 5G launch is the result of continuous collaboration, taking part in accelerating Indonesia’s digital transformation,” he explained.

According to Minister Johnny, Surakarta City along with three other cities namely, Jakarta, Surabaya and Makassar will become the commercial 5G network service areas from Indosat Ooredoo. Through the development of 5G infrastructure, the Minister of Communication and Information hopes to encourage people to take advantage of the technology ecosystem.

“The deployment of 5G cellular phones is expected to be an impetus for the people of Surakarta and other cities mentioned above in Indonesia to continue to take advantage of the development of this fifth generation cellular phone technology,” he explained.

Three Attempts

Minister Johnny stated that the deployment of 4G and 5G telecommunications network infrastructure is currently coexistent. The Minister of Communication and Information has emphasized that the 4G network is the backbone of digital transformation in all regions of the country.

“And 5G is developed in areas that are supported by an adequate 5G ecosystem, such as cities and super priority tourism destinations,” he said.

According to Minister Johnny, the Ministry of Communication and Information has made three efforts to continue to support the use and development of 5G technology. First, the preparation of an adequate frequency spectrum band through farming of spectrum frequency refarming. Second, encourage the development of quality and sustainable human resources or digital talents.

“(Third) Kominfo will also continue to deploy 4G information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure in 3T (outermost, leading, and underdeveloped) areas,” he said.

Therefore, the Minister of Communication and Information also encourages Indosat Ooredoo and cellular telecommunications operators to complete the construction of the 4G last mile Base Transceiver Station (BTS) in the Non-3T area. The area is often referred to as a commercial area to answer the increasing demand for signal and bandwidth by the community.

“Through these three efforts, it is hoped that Indonesia will make big leaps that are innovative and beneficial for the community. Let’s together make Indonesia connected, more digital, more advanced,” he said.

Digital Transformation Acceleration

Meanwhile, President Director and CEO of Indosat Ooredoo Ahmad Al-Neama said, the launch of Indosat’s 5G service shows the transformative power of 5G to young people, digital communities, and city businesses, one of which is Surakarta, which is the first choice for Indosat’s 5G launch.

“We believe this technology will help accelerate the digital transformation of Indonesian society, and drive business innovation in all industries,” he said.

He also expressed his gratitude for the government’s support which continues to be committed to deploying and utilizing the technology ecosystem. “We would like to thank the Government of Indonesia for their continued trust and support for the company,” he said.

In the series of Indosat’s 5G launches, Surakarta Mayor Gibran Rakabuming Raka hopes to bring optimism to the community in the midst of the current uncertain situation, especially for young people, women and MSMEs.

“Let’s remain optimistic that we will bounce back despite the pandemic, with this new 5G service that brings endless possibilities for digital opportunities and innovations,” he added.

The launch of 5G Indosat Ooredoo in Surakarta was attended by Mayor of Surakarta Gibran Rakabuming Raka, Ambassador of Qatar to Indonesia H.E. Fawziya Edrees Salman Al-Sulaiti, President Director of Indosat Ooredoo Ahmad Al-Neama, and CEO of Huawei Indonesia Jacky Chen.
