Minister Johnny: Implementation of 5G Strengthens National Economic Growth

The implementation of 5G telecommunications technology is a step to realize more equitable telecommunications access and strengthen national economic growth. The Minister of Communications and Information, Johnny G. Plate, stated that the implementation of 5G telecommunications technology also bridges the digital divide, increasing people’s ability and literacy to use technology more adaptively.

“Of course it will also encourage more productive use of the internet and strengthen national economic growth,” he said at the press conference on the results of the Indosat Ooredoo 5G Feasibility Test which took place virtually from the Media Center Kominfo, Jakarta, Monday (14/06/2021).

Minister Johnny stated that Indonesia had entered the 5G era some time ago, on 27 May 2021 to be exact. “We have both witnessed the commercialization carried out by PT. telkomsel. Today, Indosat has also succeeded in becoming the next telecommunications operator to receive a Certificate of Operation Eligibility or SKLO for the commercialization of 5G services,” he said.

According to the Minister of Communication and Informatics, his party has issued a Certificate of Operation Eligibility (SKLO) to PT. Indosat Ooredoo, Tbk to conduct testing in Central Jakarta in the Monas area, namely: Jalan Medan Merdeka Barat, Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan.

“The issuance of the 5G SKLO indicates that all the facilities and infrastructure for the deployment of the 5G network that have been completed by PT. Indosat Tbk, is technically ready to operate. In particular, it will be carried out on a frequency band of 1,800 Mhz or 1.8 Ghz with a bandwidth of 20 Mhz in the range of 1837.5 to 1857.5 Mhz,” he explained.

Minister Johnny explained that the stages of issuing the SKLO were carried out in accordance with Article 4 of the Regulation of the Minister of Communication and Information Number 5 of 2021 concerning Telecommunications Operations. This rule is the implementation of Law Number 11 of 2020 concerning Job Creation and Government Regulation Number 46 of 2021 concerning Post, Telecommunications, and Broadcasting.

The Minister of Communication and Information explained that the 5G standardization that has been completed provides several frequency allocations that can be used for basic connectivity, mobile broadband speed, and superdata layer on the 26, 28 and 39 GHz frequency spectrum, including for fixed broadband services. According to Minister Johnny, the Indonesian government implements a neutral technology policy in the implementation of 5G services.

“Mobile operators have the opportunity to choose neutral technologies that are suited to business considerations and the circumstances in their respective carrier environments. We hope that this choice can support cellular telecommunications service providers to develop a technology ecosystem,” he hoped.

Support Digital Transformation

Minister Johnny said the presence of 5G services is expected to develop in the not too distant future and will continue to be expanded based on market demand growth in other locations.

“In addition to Java, the use of the 4G network will also be applied to places that are the top priority for tourist destinations, such as Lake Toba in North Sumatra, Borobudur in Central Java, Mandalika in NTB, Labuan Bajo in NTT, and Liupang in North Sulawesi. . In addition, there will be locations for the manufacturing industry that will also receive 5G networks, as well as for the location of the new nation’s capital city in 2024,” he explained.

In fact, in the fifth generation or 5G, the Minister of Communication and Information expects to be able to provide services to support industry and society in the future along with the development of artificial intelligence or AI, as well as Internet of Things technology.

“Improving performance or high speed access, high capacity, low latency, and massive connectivity are the targets of this fifth generation technology,” he said.

Minister Johnny stated that the Indonesian government will continue to lay the backbone of digital transformation in the deployment of 4G signals throughout the country. “Therefore, as previously stated, Kominfo through BAKTI will complete the construction of ICT infrastructure in the 3T region in 2021 and 2022,” he said.

At the same time, the Minister of Communication and Information emphasized that the Government requested that cellular operators also complete the construction of 4G BTS-BTS for 4G signals in commercial areas, including commitments from Indosat. “So that there will be coexistence where 4G services for the national region and 5G initial commercial operation services for selected areas or areas are selected,” he explained.

According to Minister Johnny, the Government will do farming and refarming of the frequency spectrum to enable a more efficient 5G deployment. At the same time it supports the use of 4G which is also increasingly optimal.

“This development of 5G will change the way we fill our digital world, given its incredibly low latency speed. Therefore, I hope that the deployment of 4G to support as the backbone of our digital transformation and the initial commercial operation of 5G can be utilized optimally, optimally and intelligently for the benefit of our country’s development, the development of our nation and in particular for the benefit of our community development. cellular operators that have been given,” said the Minister of Communication and Informatics.

Indosat Ooredoo CEO Ahmad Al-Neama expressed his appreciation to Kominfo for supporting and allowing Indosat Ooredoo to roll out 5G services commercially. CEO Ahmad stated that Indosat Ooredoo is committed to continuously accelerating digital transformation and growing the digital economy in Indonesia through leading technology, high-speed connectivity, and the best digital experience.

“We will ensure that the presence of 5G services will benefit the community and have an impact on economic recovery. We believe Indonesia will become one of the digital economic powerhouses in the Southeast Asia region and 5G technology will play a very important role in this step forward,” he said.

In a virtual press conference broadcast on the Kominfo TV YouTube channel, Minister Johnny was accompanied by the Director General of PPI Ahmad Ramli, and the Director of Telecommunications Aju Widyasari. Meanwhile, Indosat CEO Ahmad, accompanied by Director and Chief Operating Officer Vikram Sinha.
